Cashmere
is obtained from the fleece of the Kashmire goat, which lives in the high
plateau of
Inner Asia. It was
once thought that the goats could only live at high altitudes but it turned
out it
was the dry air not
the height that the goats thrived on. These goats are now raised everywhere.
Cashmere
fibers are soft and have a high silky luster. The fiber length is usually
in the one to
three inch range and
comes in white, browns and grays. The average diameter of high quality
fiber is 14 to 16
microns. Cashmere is chemically identical to wool but due to the fineness
of the
fiber is has greater
susceptibility to alkaline damage and tendering during processing.
Cashmere
is at least twice as warm as wool and when immersed in water will become
saturated and sink
in seconds. This fiber is excellent for knitting and weaving. Knitting
should
be done on large needles
even though the yarn has been spun fine.
