The angora goat is native to the Asia Minor area centered around Angora Turkey (now called
Ankara). These goats are now raised everywhere with the largest herds can be found in Turkey,
South Africa, Texas, Australia and New Zealand. Although only white fiber is used
commercially, the goat can also be black. Shepherds believed that the black goats would bring
good luck to the herd. 
   The goats hair grows about one inch a month and the goat is clipped every six months. The
first clipping from a kid produces two to three pound and the yearling clip comes in around five
pounds. The average yield is six pounds for a doe and 15 pounds for a buck. Angora wether’s
(castrated buck) clip is considered finer then either the buck’s or doe’s and will stay finer for a
much longer time. 
   The mohair fiber has a strength equivalent to wool of the same diameter, but is not as elastic as
wool and is naturally slippery due to the flat scale surface. The fiber averages 24 to 48 microns
with a  high luster. This fiber takes dyes very well. The napping ability of mohair is due to the
flat scale surface of the fiber. Having little to grab onto the ends slip out of the yarn creating a
halo effect. This is also the reason it does not felt as easily as wool.
   Mohair can be spun in the same manner as a long wool and is very effective in novelty yarns.
The finer grades, ( kid and yearling) are used for next to the skin garments while the coarser
grades are used in upholstery fabrics and in suiting materials.
